21 September 1869 — Bologna
Tuesday. 21st [September 1869]. Had a most lovely journey from Bologna to Florence. The train goes thro’ a most lovely country thro’ valley & crossing the Apenines. The tunnels tho’ frequent are short, but on the descent into the plain to Florence one had lovely views every minute. Arrived at Florence just about dark, we were met by Mr Sloane’s carriage and also a servant to take our luggage in a fly. We had about 3 miles to drive to the Villa Careggi which is an old Medicean villa which Mr Sloane has bought. We were received at the door by both Mr & Mrs S. and we were soon made to feel at home & further rejoiced by a good meal. This is my first acquaintance with the S’s but my qualms were soon dispelled by their kindness. They have a Monsignor Stonor staying here on a visit.
