25 September 1869 — Villa Careggi, Florence
Saturday. 25th [September 1869]. We went to Florence & met Mr Boxall & Mr Spence & his eldest son at l’Accademia. Saw the pictures & library &c. & then went across the Sqr to S. Marco. Spence got us in to see the old monastery which contains 45 cells & in each cell there is a picture by Fra Angelico. It took us a long time to go over this & to see the cell in which Savonarola lived & the library &c. We went then & got some luncheon at Doney’s. Mr Boxall & I had soup & Henry who brought in Sir J. Hudson had Wermuth. The 2 Spences were with us so we were a large & merry party. We got back to Careggi abt ½ past 3. Today Mrs Sloane receives. A good many called amongst whom Ct & Css Bourtourlin.
