24 September 1869 — Villa Careggi, Florence
Friday. 24th [September 1869]. To Florence at 11 & took Hill in with us. We went to the Church Santa Croce & there met Boxall. The facade of Sta C. has just been done up and all in precious inlaid marbles towards wh Mrs Sloane contributed £1900. The whole church is being repaired and some frescoes have been discovered concealed beneath the white wash. These are being carefully uncovered. There are a great many monuments in this church to various celebrated men. From Sta Croce we went to Sta Maria Novella & then to call on the Viglianis. They very kindly gave me luncheon while Henry went out to see someone. She also sent Hill out with her maid to try & find a friend of Hills. Henry fetched me and we went back to Careggi.
