23 September 1869 — Villa Careggi, Florence
Thursday. 23rd [September 1869]. At abt 11 we drove in to Florence and went first to the Sloane house to enquire for letters & also to see if Mr Boxall had been to call on us. We left word for him to follow us and went to the Uffizi to see the pictures. We had not been there ¼ hour when we came upon Boxall and he went thro’ the gallery with us. One could have spent hours at this gallery there is so much to be seen & so many lovely pictures worth seeing & remembering—the pictures by Raphael so lovely & numerous are astonishing—but we had not time to linger and merely walked thro’ Henry pointing out the most celebrated. We then went thro’ the long passage, a great part of it lined with tapestries, to the Pitti and taking a hurried survey we went quickly thro’ & then returned to the Sloanes’ house where we found their carriage all ready to drive us back to Careggi & we got back in time for 4 o’cl dinner. Dinner party. Lady Oxford & Lady B. Walpole—Mr & Mrs Vigliani—Mr Jervoise—Boxall—Mr Plunkett—Miss Macleod in eveng.
