27 September 1869 — Villa Careggi, Florence
Monday. 27th [September 1869]. We were told this morng that the servants had felt an earthquake at ½ past 9 last night. It must have been slight as we never perceived while we were at tea. We went into Florence at 11 & drove to the Duomo. We then went into the Battisterio & then to Goodban’s the librarian. There I waited while Henry did some business. We then walked to the other side of the river to call on Mrs Ross & found her in. She kept us to luncheon. Her little boy (Henry’s godson) was at luncheon an intelligent little fellow of abt 6 or 7.
