28 September 1869 — Villa Careggi, Florence
Tuesday. 28th [September 1869]. Saw 3 churches Or. San Michele, Sta Trinità & Annunziata. We also went to call on Mlle Caroline Sorelli whom Henry has known many years & of whom I have heard much from Grannie. She is bedridden & lives at the Bourtourlin palace. When we went there we were shown in to the B’s who were sitting in the garden wh Ct Bourtourlin has made beautiful with magnolias & camelia trees & flowers under their sitting room windows. After paying them a visit we mounted up to the 2nd floor to see “Caroline” & she was delighted to see us. She seems full of occupation & good deeds even tho’ such an invalid. We then went to the Viglianis’ where Hy dropped me. I found a Mlle Valery calling (daughter of the author). Mme Vigliani gave me luncheon & Henry some wine when he fetched me away. We went to Spence’s house & saw all his pictures etc. a nice house. Had to get home early as the Sloanes had a dinner at 5. Ct & Css Bourtourlin, Mr & Mrs F. Walpole, Miss Murray, Mrs Herries & a French gentleman (I forget name). Miss Macleod came in eveng. Today Mrs Sloane recd. A good many called.
