7 October 1869 — Rome
Thursday. 7th [October 1869]. We went after breakfast to the Vatican & took Hill with us. We went first to see the Popes’ mosaic works where he is having the portraits of all the Popes done in mosaic for St Paul’s. We saw also Raphael’s Loggia—the Stanze, the Sistine Chapel & the picture gallery. (We then went to an old woman’s where I got another old bit of silk lace (This was Friday morng)). After lunch we drove to S. Clementi’s where Father Mallooly expected us and Henry went up to the Monastery & had some wine while I waited below. They soon came & we lighted tapers and went down to see the old Basilica wh was discovered and excavated by Father Mallooly. He showed us the beautiful marble pillars of the old church, wh now support the newer one & under the Basilica is the oratory of St Clementi wh is also built on the top of an old roman building. After thanking the Father M. for this most interesting sight we left him & went on to the Palace of the Caesars wh Sigr Rosa took us all over & showed us particularly the pre-Imperial house which is now being excavated close to the Palace & wh is all in wonderful preservation & has a great deal of curious painting on the walls. We returned home much gratified tho’ a little tired.
