6 October 1869 — Rome | |
Wednesday. 6th [October 1869]. We drove to S. Paolo fuori muri & then to the Pantheon. The Pope is having this church restored. The pavement is being restored, the dome gilt and the centre is to be glazed wh has till now always been open to the skies. We lunched at Nazari & then went home. In the afternoon we took a quick drive along the Via Appia to see the old tombs. The weather was quite lovely and the view over the Campagna with the old aqueduct & Albano in the distance was beautiful. In the eveng we had a visit from Monsignor Stonor just arrived from Careggi. | |
