5 October 1869 — Rome
Tuesday. 5th [October 1869]. Spent the morning at the Vatican & finished seeing the sculpture. Went to Nazari for some luncheon & home to rest a little. Afterwards we went to the Palace of the Caesars’ hoping Sigr Rosa would be able to show us the recent excavations made by the Emp. of the French. He had an engagement so he had only time to explain part & we arranged to return on Thursday. We went on to S. Clementi. Henry there found his friend Father Mallooly & asked him to take us to see the Basilica under S. Clementi. We stayed so long chatting & drinking some of the Convent wine that we found we had not time to stay & so made another appointment for Thursday. We drove off to Monte Cavallo where Henry had appointed to meet the duke of Sermoneta & go to Cardinal Antonelli’s gardens to see the Cardl. I was going to wait in the carriage but the duke hearing this made me go in too & the Cardinal recd us most cordially & took us into the closed verandah. There we 4 sat & Henry, the Duke (who has gone quite blind) & the Card talked while I gathered all I could wh was not all they said as they conversed in Italian. Hy asked the Card: whether he was not satisfied with what had been done abt the Irish ch: & told the Card he should use all his influence in keeping Bishop Cullen & the Irish Romans quiet so as not to increase the difficulties of the Govt. I cd not understand all he answered except that the Card: excused Cullen &c &c. After abt an hour we rose & he took us round his garden & gave me a large bunch of delicate yellow roses. He showed us the camelias & oranges growing in the open air. Met his brother also there who is totally unlike the Card: in manner & appearance. At 8 we went to dine at the Sermoneta’s. The Prince Teano his son was there & also the married daughter & another gentleman. After dinner the Dss showed me all her painting on china & even took me to her painting room & up to the attics to show me where she baked the china.
