4 October 1869 — Rome | |
Monday. 4th [October 1869]. We took a carriage & went to Castellani’s the jeweller. Looked at his things then went to the Vatican. We stayed there till 1½ looking thro the old inscriptions & we got ½ way thro the sculpture gallery. We then went to Nazari in the Piazza di Spagna to luncheon & then home to rest a little. After lunch we went by appointment to meet Sigr Visconti at the Marmorata. There he showed & explained all the excavations he has lately made where he has discovered the ancient Marmorata used by the Romans wh are most curious. He sent me a letter weight made of the marble dug up there. | |
