3 October 1869 — Rome
Sunday. 3rd [October 1869]. Wrote in morning & we took a drive. We drove by the Forum and went to the Colosseum. We got out & walked about for some time & sat in the shade for it was very hot. We then went on to St John Lateran a most beautiful church. We then told the man to drive us to a restaurant to get some lunch when he persisted on to taking us to a queer little Osteria just outside the gates. It was not very nice but we sat at a little table in the yard & after a time they brought us some sour wine & chicken broiled with garlic, being late we made the best of it & told the man to go to St Peter’s. We wanted to hear the vespers but finding they were not till ¼ past 4 we went home for a little while & returned for vespers. Some of the music was very good– There was one man with a most extraordinary high falsetto voice wh was more curious than pretty. We went home when it was over. Table d’hôte at 6½.
