14 October 1869 — Naples
Thursday. 14th [October 1869]. Mr Ed Bonham brought Henry a telegram from Ld Clarendon calling him home at once so we settled to start tomorrow if there is a steamer going to Genoa. Mr B. promised to find out for us. At 11 Sigr Castellani came for us & we hired a carriage & drove abt all the morng. We went to Chevalr St Angelo to see his Palazzo and his family collection of pictures wh he wants to sell: He has a large number with very grand names to them but Henry says there are only 4 or 5 really good. He has 3 or 4 very fine Salvator Rosas and a very fine picture of the Holy Family & St Marguerite by               . We went to the Museum to see the fine arras wh have been left to the Museum by Marquis de la Scala & were given his ancestor by Charles V in reward for his having taken Francis I prisoner. The family are disputing at law the right of the Marquis to leave them away from the family so at present they are not put up in the Museum. We went back to luncheon & afterwards went to Castellani’s house to see his fine collection of ancient gold jewellery which he had in from the bank on purpose to show us & which is magnificent & filled abt 10 tables. He has offered them for sale to our Brit: museum & begged Henry to get them to give him a decided answer as to whether the Govt wd buy them. We then went back & dressed & drove out to dine with Mr Bonham at the Villa du Rose at ½ past 6. We met there a Mr Scott—also the Swiss Consul & his wife who seems a very nice person & spoke English fluently. We went back at abt 10. Mr Bonham had found there was a steamer starting tomorrow at 2 in the day & has taken our places for Leghorn.
