6 November 1869 — 21 Grafton Street
Saturday. 6th [November 1869]. We left town & went down to The Grove to stay with the Clarendons. We went down with Mr & Mrs & Miss Mary Gladstone. When we got to Watford we were met by their omnibus & Henry & Gladstone walked from the station. We found the Odo Russells staying there. Mr Vernon Harcourt & Bright, Lord & Lady Essex came over to dinner. Lord Hyde, George & Francis Hyde were all at home. Vernon Harcourt took me down to dinner & put me next Lord Essex who was very nice but nearly quite blind. I took a great dislike to V. Harcourt who was pompous & absurd.
