7 November 1869 — The Grove, Watford, Hertfordshire
Sunday. 7th [November 1869]. We drove to the Watford new church. I went with Ld & Ly C. & Gladstone in the carriage—every one else went in the omnibus. Good sermon. Henry Calcraft arrived in the morng. After lunch we walked over to Cassiobury to call on the Essex. The party went across the fields but I went round by the road with George & Francis Hyde. Halfway Lady Clarendon, who was driving Mrs Ed. Villiers in the basket carriage, came back & picked me up. By the time we got to Cassiobury it was nearly dark & we could not see the pictures. We had tea & came away. Lady C. drove me home and they tried to make Ld C. drive but he insisted on walking spite of a twinge he had of gout. Bright took me to dinner & I sat by Henry Calcraft. We had prayers before dinner. Lord Clarendon read prayers.
