21 December 1869 — Madrid
Tuesday. 21st [December 1869]. Took my lesson at ½ past 10. Did accounts & wrote letters all the morning. It was showery & windy all day & I did not go out. In the afternoon we had a visit from the banker Marquis Mudela. He speaks very little French & had to talk ½ french & ½ spanish. At 5 Genl Sickles spent some time with us. Today all the govt the Regent & Prim are going off for a shooting expedition in the hills. Prim asked Henry to go but he declined. M. Mercier said he was going. The shooting was to be wild boar, deer, partridges &c—but the time is chiefly spent in eating & drinking & card playing. They say Prim plays high. Messrs Ashburnham & Ffrench dined with us & we retired abt 11–
