25 December 1869 — Madrid
Saturday. [25th December 1869]. Christmas Day. To church at ½ past 11. Recd a box of Malaga raisins from M. Weisweiller. After lunch we went out driving. We went to “La Mahonese” to buy some sweetmeats for dessert and then went & took a walk in the Buen Retiro wh Henry had never seen. There were a great many people there. In the morng we had a visit from the Greek priest of the Russian embassy to say the poor Englishwoman was dead & begging us to arrange for her funeral wh was done and we are going to see what can be done for the 4 children she has left behind her. Before going out driving I went over & paid Mme Mercier a visit & heard there that there had been no midnight mass last night. The Regent being away the Govt were afraid of a row & issued an order forbidding it; they say there were crowds at each church door clamouring to be let in. We dined at 7 & had the Chaplain & Mrs & 3 Miss Whytes, Mr & Mrs Hamilton, Mr & Mrs Hunt, Col. Fitch, Captains Burnaby & Wynter (the messenger), Messrs Ffrench & Ashburnham. After dinner came in Col Stephenson & Mr Rycroft who have just arrived. We had music. Mrs Hunt sang splendidly & Mr Ffrench also sang very well & has a fine voice. I sang & so with singing & talking we passed a pleasant evening & broke up after 12.
