28 December 1869 — Madrid
Tuesday. 28th December [1869]. Copied letters for Henry & wrote letters. After lunch had a visit from Col. Fitch. We went out at 3 and drove to call on Mme Bertrand de Lis who lives in a farm house just outside Madrid. Found them at home. She is an Englishwoman & her son is married to the daughter of the Infanta. She was also there and seemed a very nice person but very melancholy at the state of affairs. We walked a good part of the way home & then went and left a few cards. At 5 had a visit from M. Comines who says he has been ill of rheumatic fever the last fortnight. I began to pack my little boxes to send to England by the messenger tomorrow & sent for Mr Ashburnham to help me wh he did till dinner time. We asked him to dine with us & afterwards we went to the Opera to hear “L’Africaine.” Ferni & Tamberlick sang. I had never heard this Opera before & thought it rather heavy but it is not easy to understand the first hearing. Saw Mr Rycroft there & M. Weisweiller. Just as we were going to the theatre we heard the coachman was very ill.
