4 January 1870 — Madrid
Tuesday. 4th [January 1870]. Took Spanish lesson from ½ past 10 to ½ past 11. Did some writing and Mr Hunt came at ¼ to 1 and gave me my first singing lesson. We lunched at 1 and immediately afterwards drove to see the Picture Gallery where we met the Riaños & went over it with them. The unfortunate thing was that as they had been smoking in the morng all the “braseros” were extinguished and consequently the place was like a well & we were so cold we could not enjoy it nor stay long. Certainly one was also bewildered by the beauty of the collection, the Raphaels, Titians and Velasquez & Murillo. Before leaving, the Riaños took us to M. Gisbert’s studio, he being the present director. He was painting a full length of the Duchess de la Torre in a white satin—rather like—& showed us one begun of the Dss de Frias, who was Lady Crampton. Mr Ashburnham came in to tea & he & Mr Ffrench dined with us.
