7 January 1870 — Madrid
Friday. 7th [January 1870]. Took Spanish lesson. It was again a foggy day and I had rather a face ache so I did not go out. I occupied myself in writing a long letter to Maria. In the afternoon Mr Ffrench came up & he & Henry went out to the curiosity shops together. I sent Mrs Hunt a note asking her to come & see me. When I had done my writing I practised till she came wh she did abt 5. Abt ½ past Henry came home having bought some cabinets, a piece of iron work & some bits of silk. Just after Mrs H. had gone there arrived two large cages with a “cardinal” in each which Henry had bought for me this afternoon. They are beauties and one is lovely with a red breast besides the head. I shall call them Card: Wiseman & Card: Antonelli! Mr Ffrench sat talking to us till he suddenly had to rush away fearing to be too late for dinner. In the evening we had a little flute playing. This day year Henry & I were engaged—we were at Uffington.
