8 January 1870 — Madrid | |
Saturday. 8th [January 1870]. Rather late this morning. Mr Hunt gave me a lesson & Mrs H. also came & they stayed luncheon. Just after lunch Count A. Bernstorff called with an introduction from his mother in London. I asked him to dine here on Monday—as soon as he was gone I went out in the carriage with Mme Riaño. We went to try & buy some lace & a black velvet gown and then I took her home & came home. The Hunts dined with us & we went to the Opera to hear Faust. The mise en scene was good but the performance not good altho Massini sang better than she did in the Sonnambula. We did not stay quite to the end. The Prims were there & Dss de la Torre & Henry went to Prim & heard that he had succeeded in forming a Ministry & that M. Silvela had accepted “Foreign affairs” & M Sagasta . The theatre was unusually full it being the 1st night of Faust. Miss Whyte came at 5 & practised hymns. | |
