9 January 1870 — Madrid | |
Sunday. 9th [January 1870]. Henry got up at 7 to go to Toledo but I gave it up & got up late. I went to the service but was ¼ hour late owing difference of clocks. I spoke to Mrs Lilburn & as she was waiting for her carriage I asked her up & she stayed a little while. At lunch Mrs Hunt arrived & directly afterwards she & I & Mr Hunt went off the Quartet concert to hear Monasterio who played better than ever & I should have enjoyed it more had I not had a bad headache. We returned here to tea & Mr Ffrench who was ill all yesterday joined us. When the Hunts left he stayed talking every kind of thing especially religion till past 7 when Henry returned. He was very tired and we did not go out to the Montijos’ as my head was bad. Mr Ff. did not dine but came up in the evening. Henry said he was glad I had not gone to Toledo as it was most tiring altho’ they had a state carriage with kitchen attached & had breakfast going & tea coming back. They had 5 hours there & flew all over the town. The only ladies were Mmes Bauer & Cohen. | |
