10 January 1870 — Madrid
Monday. 10th [January 1870]. Still a headache. Had a Spanish lesson & also a singing lesson and did some writing. After lunch Henry & I went out driving & went to the Italian bird shop in the Plaza Topete where we invested in 9 more birds & were going on to the Retiro to walk, when it came on to rain & we left 2 cards & then went home– As my head had got worse I took off my dress & laid on the sofa in my room & went to sleep when Henry came in & found the room full of smoke as the wind had got up so it blew all the fire into the room so I came & had another nap in the drawing room & by dressing time I was nearly well. We had our usual Monday dinner party—M et Mme de Martino, Mr & Mrs Bauer, Messrs Ff. & Ash., Mr Molony, Ct Bernstorff & Genl Sickles. In the evening a good many came in—M. Cerruti, Gayangos, the Canitzes, Hunts, Mr Adye & Col Hay (both U.S), Mr Rosty, Mr Palmerio (the painter) and both Mr & Mrs Hunt sang very well. Bed at 1.
