24 January 1870 — Madrid
Monday. 24th [January 1870]. I took Mme Riaño out for a drive & we went to Mr Salamanca’s house at Viste Alegre abt ½ hours drive from Madrid past the cemeteries. None of the family were there but we went into the garden & saw all the hothouses & the French gardener was very civil & gave me a lot of flowers, cut & in pots—& I had new milk brought to me. We stayed so long there that by the time I took Mme R. home & got back it was rather late– Found Mercier here—he had come to ask us to dinner with them the next day to meet an Arab chief. We had our usual dinner party consisting of M & Mme & Mlle Figuera– . After dinner several people came in amongst whom the Dss de la Torre & at first some looked rather askance at her but finally talked to her—still she was rather a wet blanket & did not stay late–
