6 February 1870 — Madrid
Sunday. 6th [February 1870]. Church in the morning. We went to the quartet concert at 2 & I sat between Mme Riaño & Mlle Figuera. In front sat 2 girls with wonderful coiffures & untidy long curls. Hairpins began to fly—& the curls to totter in their fastenings. Having consulted whether it would have been polite to warn her that she would lose her curl we settled that Mme Riaño should pick up a hair pin & return it to her as a hint; She did so—but the lady took it in such bad part that when the curl slid down further & further we dared not tell her & so we sat watching it till it all but fell on my lap. Luckily her gown being woolen it stuck to her & we fled at the end of the concert & left the curl pendant. In the eveng we went to the Regents & thence to Mme Montijo’s where there were a great many people.
