3 March 1870 — Madrid | |
Thursday. 3rd [March 1870]. I spent nearly all the morning over my birds & flowers but also wrote letters to Mr Helps &c. In the afternoon as it was showery we [did] not go out in the carriage but Henry & I, between the showers, walked over to the Armoury & spent some time there examining the armour with the man, a pupil of Zuluaga’s who is in charge there. We then took a little walk & came home. We dined at 7 at the Regent’s a dinner given expressly for the benefit of Henry who had wished to taste some Spanish dishes. The Prims, Canitz, De Martinos, Silvelas &c were there 30 in all– Topete took me in & I sat next to Mercier. It was a dreadfully long affair. We sat down at ¼ past 7 & rose at ½ past 9. I did not much like the cooking but I especially disliked the “calamares in tinta”—simply “cuttlefish in its own ink”. I did not either like Topete who is a rather noisy & somewhat unrefined sailor. We went home abt ½ past 10. I had some talk with Mme Silvela in Spanish & made myself quite understood. | |
