4 March 1870 — Madrid | |
Friday. 4th [March 1870]. I had a Spanish lesson– Afterwards a singing lesson & wrote in the morng & sent Maria the menu of yesterday by the French courier. After lunch at 3 the Regent’s youngest little girl “Venturita” & her governess came to see me—also Mr Ff: I went out in the Landau & took the child & governess. I left some cards & then we went to the Fuente but it soon came on to rain so hard that I took them back to the Palace & then as the rain ceased I went back to call on Lady Ely & also on Mme de Martino but did not find them in & as it rained again I went home. Soon after Lady Ely came & sat with me a little while. Henry soon came in from his walk; he had been with Mr Ff: to see the celebrated Zuluaga who is a worker in metals inlaid. He saw also his collection of china. Cerruti came in to tea & sat some time. We were very much amused today by Dr Brehm walking in to see how we were having seen in the papers that we were going to eat a Spanish dinner; he thought we should be ill. In fact we were neither of us very well. We dined at ½ past 7 & afterwards played Mandola & also some music & flute & went to bed early. | |
