10 March 1870 — Madrid
Thursday. 10th [March 1870]. While Henry was having his Spanish lesson parcels came from Mercier his courier had brought us from Paris. I received a letter from Bee with a small sorcière ring and some photos of Connie’s children. I wrote to Bee. I got this morning also a Buen Retiro bowl as a present from Dr Brehm. Venturita came to go out drivg with me. Just as we were Dr Brehm came to see us. Then we went out & at the door met Lady Ely who said she would come back to tea at 5. We went to the Casa de Campo & took a walk there. We then went to Laurent’s & bought the 2 photos: of Cortes Armour & spade to send to Helps who is writing the life of Hernan Cortes & then home to tea. Lady Ely came as arranged & told us she was going to start on their Northern tour tomorrow morning. Abt ½ past 5 Messrs Montgomery & Arragon came with their music & played some duetts of classical music to see if I would like them to play a duett some Monday eveng. When they were gone I had just 10 minutes to sing with Mr Hunt & then dress for dinner as M. & Mme Riaño Mr Gayangos & Mr Ash: dined with us. We had a very pleasant evening. Mr Ffrench came in after dinner. I sang a little. Lady Ely sent me [a] note to ask Hill to make her dress during her absence–
