11 March 1870 — Madrid
Friday. 11th [March 1870]. I took a S. lesson. I wrote to Arthur Helps & sent to him the photos of Cortes armour by the French courier. We lunched early as Henry had to go & see Sagasta. We came back before 3 so he accompanied me to drive & we went to fetch Mme Riaño & then we drove out to Caravanchel to Vista Allegre Mr Salamanca’s house. We found Mme Salca: the daughter in law & Mme Savedra the niece, spending the day there. We went over the house which is a curious mixture of good & bad taste—fine & vile things—all the pictures are bad tho’ with good names—as he had sold the pick of them some years ago to Lord Dudley. We went afterwards to the Dairy & had fresh milk & also picked violets & walked in the garden. We were rather late getting home & had to dress almost at once for dinner as we had an English dinner party Mr & Mrs Bell Mr & Mrs Whyte, Mr Ross Mr Knowles Col Litch & a Mr & Mrs Hoskins & Mr Ffrench. I sang a little in the evening & they departed about ½ past 10 when we went to Mme Canitz who had a small eveng party. We did not stay very long as it was very hot & her rooms are small.
