14 March 1870 — Madrid
Monday. 14th [March 1870]. Had my Spanish lesson & wrote letters to Maria. Lunched early & at 2 went to Palmaroli’s studio. We saw there a battle scene he is painting also 2 or 3 portraits amongst wh a very nice one of Mme Bauer. Then I drove Henry to the picture gallery where I left him & went for Mme Riaño & we went shopping to get Lady Ely’s things & a spring gown for me– We then went back to the Gallery & picked up Henry & went for a drive up & down the Fuente & then came home to tea. It was a most lovely day & the sun quite hot. Mme R’s husband & boy came to fetch her & take her home. We had people to dinner viz: Le Marquis de la Puente & his daughter Miss J. Osmar—The Count & Css of Fuenrubia D. Scipion Morillo. D. Pedro de Alvarez de Toledo—D. José España, Sir Rd de la Sausaye, (an old Genl an English man who was in the Spanish army.) Messrs Ff. & Ashm. A few people came in the eveng—only men—as tonight there was a great “funcíon” at the Opera for the benefit of poor Italians– Mr Hunt sang once– The papers are very absurd abt the late duel– The Montpensier papers do not notice it at all—others say “On Saty morng Don Enrique died suddenly.”!! The “Tiempo” is the only one which has the full truth & the official papers– There appears to have been a kind of pretence of a judicial enquiry but it was decided that “D. Enrique died from his pistol going off in his own hand & hitting him in the head while trying a new arms”– This seems the usual manner of hushing up such affairs.
