16 March 1870 — Madrid
Wednesday. 16th [March 1870]. I had my Spanish lesson & afterwards wrote to Lady Duff Gordon. We got a letter from the M. saying they want to come here on Saty & asked us to telegraph if we could have them which we did in the affirmative. At 2 we went to meet the Riaños & Mr Gayangos at the Academy to see the pictures—there are some very fine ones there Murillos, Goyas, &c. After spending abt ½ hour there we took Mme R. to the Buen Retiro where we took a good long turn & went to the view at the end of the “Pinos” where we could see the troops exercising in the distance; we then went to the Casa de [illegible word]—took Henry to Laurent’s & left him there to make an appointment for me to be photod & Mme R. & I went shopping & I got a bonnet. I then dropped her at her house & came home. Mr Hunt came for our usual practise. We dined alone & had a quiet evening singing & playing the flute & to bed early.
