17 March 1870 — Madrid
Thursday. 17th [March 1870]. Wrote in morning. In afternoon I went to take Mme Riaño out driving. We left a few cards & then went for a drive along the Mon Cloa on the Pardo road where there is a lovely view of the snow topped mountains. On the way home we passed Mr de Riaño & the boy walking so Mme R. would not come in to tea but walked home with them. Mme de Canitz came to tea saying she was going the next day to the Escurial for change of air & brought her cousins Mr & Miss Clifford to be introduced to us & her other little cousin to bid us farewell as she was leaving here on Monday. After dinner we went to the Zarzuela to hear an operetta of Barbieri’s called “Pan y Toros.” It was very amusing & all the costumes &c of the last century made it very interesting. We had the Marquis de Mudela’s box & took the Riaños with us & were joined by Mudela’s son.
