17 April 1870 — Madrid | |
Sunday. 17th [April 1870]. Did not breakfast very early & went to Church at ½ past 11. I was surprised to see that altho’ Easter Sunday there was no Communion prepared and I was still more horrified when in the middle of the service the porter came in with a tray & began arranging the table for the Sacrament & inwardly blamed Mr Whyte for not having attended to it before the service began. When we came out of church the carriage was at the door & we had just time to get luncheon & start for the Concert. We put down Hy in the Puerta del Sol & went & fetched Mr Cole & took him with us & were just in time for the 1st piece & were soon joined by Henry. They played very well & a charming selection, amongst other things Beethoven’s pastorale. At abt 5 we drove home and had tea & I rested before dinner. Mr Cole dined & also his son—Mr Campbell & Messrs Ash: & Seyr. Mr Bauer came in after dinner to talk to us abt the trains to Toledo & gave us the tickets for the Bullfight. At abt 10 I & the Genl & Henry & the M. & S & Mr Cole went to Mme Montijo’s where we saw 2 plays acted & were nearly killed by the heat of the room. We did not stay but came away as soon as the plays were over. | |
