25 April 1870 — Madrid
Monday. 25th [April 1870]. I wrote in the morning & made arrangements for our departure for Cordova this evening. Mr Riaño came in the morng to see about the packing of Mr Cole’s things & so I sent word that I would fetch Mme R. in the afternoon wh I did & we went to leave some cards & do 2 or 3 little commissions. We dined at 6½ & the Hunts came to say good bye & sat with us while at dinner. At abt 8 we started and got a compartment all to ourselves. We took Giovanni with us & left Hill in charge of the house. As soon as the train had started we made up beds & arranged ourselves for the night & slept very well. Abt sunrise I woke & found we were going thro’ a very pretty country thro’ olive farms & well cultivated plains which were watered by the old Moorish way of a water wheel. As we got near Cordova the country got even prettier & there were great aloe hedges. We arrived at C. about 12½ and were met by Mr Rutledge & a Don Duncan Shaw who is a resident English lead smelter & he had come to offer us his carriage & took us to the Hotel Suisse. We found that Mrs Burr’s maid (Dentone) had arrived & she kindly helped me to undress & I laid down to rest while Henry went off to see the Cathedral. I dozed but woke with a headache but got up & dressed & went down to dinner but found I could eat nothing. While we were at dinner a blind man played fantasias on the guitar. After dinner we had a visit from the Commander of the town & his wife & mother—& I was obliged to summon up my best Spanish as they could not speak French. I got on pretty well & would have done better but that all the time I felt so faint & ill & as soon as they departed I rushed into bed and Henry went to the Theatre with Mr Rutledge.
