28 April 1870 — Cordova
Thursday. 28th [April 1870]. We breakfasted at ½ past 8 & then went again to the Cathedral where we found the Burrs & Mrs B was sketching. At abt 1 we proceeded by train to Sevilla. At the station we met M. de la Vega & Col. Pombo who was going a little way on the line & in the train (wh had come from Madrid) was Vizconde del Cerro & his young daughter. The line is very pretty & soon after leaving Cordova one passes a lovely old ruined castle where Pedro the Cruel is said to have lived—& then one comes to the Guadalquivir wh is a fine river & the hedges of aloe & prickly pear make it very pretty & is novel to my eyes. At Seville our consul Mr Williams met us & went with us to the Hotel de Londres. It was just 5 & we found the table d’hôte was ready so we went down to it. In the evening we had a visit from Mrs Williams. Mr Burr did not come with us to Sevilla but went to Madrid in order to go to the baths of Alhama for his rheumatism.
