29 April 1870 — Seville | |
Friday. 29th [April 1870]. The first thing after breakfast Mr Will: came to fetch us and we went to the Cathedral which is very fine & of most grand proportions but did not please me or strike my fancy so entirely as that of Cordova. However it contains many beautiful things both in the way of pictures & silver altars carvings &c. & we spent the whole morning there. Mrs Williams also met us there & her niece & daughter a nice girl of 13. When we left the cathedral we begged Mr W. to take us to eat a little luncheon so he took us to the Café Suisse where we had a most excellent little repast on a cup of coffee, a kind of cake & mountain strawberries with orange juice squeezed over them & this for 4 cost us 19 reals. We then went on refreshed, with our walk. We bought some very pretty little silver clasps at 2 pesetas each & then went home & dined at the table d’hôte at 5 & afterwards dressed & went to the Opera to see the Barbiere. It was very well given tho’ we did not admire the prima donna one Mlle Marquise but all the men sang very well. We found we were in the box next to the Montpensiers who were all there. The Dss & 2 very tall plain daughters & the Duc. We saw del Cerro & his family at the opera. | |
