3 May 1870 — Seville | |
Tuesday. 3rd [May 1870]. Mrs Burr went off early to sketch & Hy & I had breakfast at 9 & wrote letters till Mrs Williams came to see us & we settled about the black blonde mantilla which I settled to keep for £8. We waited till ½ past 1 for Mr Williams who said he was coming & at last left word for him to follow us & went to the Café Suisse for our luncheon & still he did not come so we left word for him to follow us to the Casa Pilatos & walked on—on the road I glanced into a shop & saw amongst a heap of old clothes—some fine old red silk hangings which we at once darted in & secured for £2, but the woman declared a Frenchman for whom she was collecting silk hangings would be furious with her if he knew of it & begged us to carry it away then & there so we got a poor woman to carry the bundle after us and went on our road; before we had got very far a child ran after us saying the woman had some thing else so we retraced our steps, but they proved to be only some more inferior red colchas which we did not buy. At last we got to the Casa Pilatos & were let in & shown over it. It is now in repair—but is a magnificent Moorish House belonging to the Medinaceli. The tiles, arabesque work & ceilings are most lovely. Before long Mr Williams joined us there carrying carefully a parcel wh on opening turned out to [be] Langoustines a kind of gigantic prawn which comes from Cadiz & is very delicious, being like a tiny tender lobster. This we had eaten in Madrid & is hardly relishable without bread salt & other appendages however Williams insisted that I should taste one there & at once set to work to shell me one, at the same time making Mrs W. do one for Henry, he then gave the rest to the poor woman to carry with the silk & we trotted on, rather anxious to find a carriage as I was getting tired. We past by the Ch: of St Ysidro & went in for a minute to look at the Retablo & then walked on some little way till at last we sat down in a shop & Williams went & fetched us a carriage & we went to a silversmiths where we bought some little silver clasps for 2 pesetas a piece & a little silver plate for £2 & then we drove on to Mr Williams’ house & afterwards to Sta Paula to fetch Mrs Burr who was drawing. We dined at 5 oclock. | |
