5 May 1870 — Seville | |
Thursday. 5th [May 1870]. Mrs Burr having gone out to draw, Henry & I went out for a walk in the town & went to the Cathedral. Mass was going on & being some especial day there was a kind of procession & the adoring & exposing of some very sacred relique & the great organ playing but it was not a very fine one & after that we went back to the hotel where Mr Will came to fetch us for our day’s work & we went out & hired an open carriage & went to the University where in the Chapel there are some fine tombs of the Guzman family wh were moved from Italica & some fine pictures by Roclas. We went amongst other churches & the Convent of Sta Clara which has a very nice old church with the usual lovely tiles peculiar to this place. Just as we were coming away old Will called me back & said we are going to see the nuns & led the way with the sacristan up a little stair case at the top of wh was a small room with table & chairs & a round kind of machine wh the nuns used to take in their food &c. by. The nuns came behind it & applied their eyes to a little hole in the whirligig to see on thro’ & then Mr Will proceeded to explain to the holy mother that we were anxious to carry away a remembrance of Sta Clara if they had any thing pretty & old fashioned to sell. We heard them consulting & at last they said they would see & after some scuffling & shuffling of feet they put some thing into the turnstile wh turned out to be a nice old fashioned inlaid wood box & then they went to see for other things but there was nothing came round that we cared about so after a time they took 7 duros for their box & we carried it off. One of the poor things had a very bad cough wh made me very sorry for her & luckily Mr Will had some bonbons in his pocket from Mr Pickman’s feast & he let me give them for her cough. At ¼ to 4 we went to Sta Paula’s to fetch Mrs Burr home & we were obliged to hurry her as a storm was beginning. We went thro’ such narrow streets that 2ce there was not room for the carriage to go round the corner & they had to get down & lift the carriage round. We got back just abt 5 in time for the table d’hôte & made Mr Will stay & dine with us. We went to say good bye to Mr W. & met there the curé of Italica. | |
