6 May 1870 — Seville | |
Friday. 6th [May 1870]. We left Seville very much to our regret at 9.50 & went back to Cordova where we arrived about 2. Mrs Burr went at once to draw & Mr Rutledge & Henry & I went for a walk. We went to the silversmiths & got some rosaries—then to see the great-ball room at the Casino wh is enormous & larger than the one at Buckingham Palace, I think. Then we went to the Square where the market is held & where the bullfights are held & the old windows with only shutters are still the same as used to be in the Plaza Mayor here in past times. However as I had a sore toe walking about on the bad pavement did not improve it & it got to hurt me so much that I begged Henry to leave me at the hotel & I laid down & rested while Henry went down to the river to find Mrs Burr & it was very hot & there was a thunderstorm. I went down to the table d’hôte at 6 but my head ached & directly afterwards I went to bed tho’ it was a long time before I got to sleep as there was a party of 16 Spanish excursionists from Cadiz in the next room who played the piano & made altogether a tremendous noise. | |
