7 May 1870 — Cordova
Saturday. 7th [May 1870]. Mrs B. went out early to sketch in the Cathedral. I & Henry & Mr Rutledge went out after breakfast to the carpenter’s shop where we saw him mending lots of old furniture & where I saw some fine old fan sticks with common paper & broken outside sticks & also some of those curious Spanish pottery plates. However we did not buy any more as Hy found that some he had bought here yesterday had been painted up blue by the man to enhance the value of them, from here we went on to the Cathedral where we found Mrs Burr sketching & I sat with her some little time. It was the feast of St Rafael & there was some kind of ceremony going on & a procession & then I went home with Henry. My foot hurt me a good deal so I did not go out any more & sat writing all the afternoon. We had a call from a Mme von Orlich & her niece Miss Buckley Mathew. It appears they are distant relations being one sister & the other daughter of Mr Mathew our minister at Rio. We dined at table d’hôte at 6 & afterwards sat & had coffee in the Patio where we were joined by Mme v O. & her niece & later we had a visit from the Governor of Cordova & his mother & wife—& then we retired early.
