19 May 1870 — Toledo
Thursday. 19th [May 1870]. We breakfasted at 8.30 & then went out. The Mayor who was with us yesterday (the one who spoke English) was engaged so we went with the other gentleman & the cicerone & Vincente the curiosity dealer to the cathedral. We spent some time in the sacristy wh is beautiful. The ceiling painted in fresco & the walls also. We also saw several of the smaller chapels & spent a long time here & then went to Sta Cruz where there is a very fine hall to be seen in the shape of a cross & of beautiful proportions. We also went to Sta Clara where there is a beautiful retablo with curious old Spanish pictures & some nice tiles & some of the nuns came & opened a cloister door & talked to us. Going back to the Inn we stopped at a bootmaker’s & looked at some curiosities he had & bought 2 nice fans—one tortoise shell & silvered but with common paper & the other silver filigree of Philippine work, we gave 20 douros for the 2. We went to the Inn for some luncheon at 1 & it being very hot were glad to sit still till abt 5 when we hired a little waggonette & went for a drive to S. Juan de los Reyes & over the bridge to see the fine old Moorish walls, & we went round by the Great Hospital & back by the Gate called Puerta del Sol which has been lately restored & the road now passes round it not under it & we went back to the Inn & dined at 7.30. The inn is most charmingly clean & the food not at all bad—& we had plenty of strawberries with orange juice over them à l’español.
