18 May 1870 — Madrid
Wednesday. 18th [May 1870]. We got up early & breakfasted at 8 & went off to Toledo by ½ past 9 train arriving there at 2. We were met by 2 or 3 gentlemen friends of friends here—one who spoke English D. P. Gallardo & we went to the Fonda de Lino & got some luncheon. Giovanni went to Toledo yesterday & had secured us rooms & prepared us luncheon, after lunch we set off with the 2 gentlemen into the town to see the Cathedral which is most lovely & wh I like better than that of Seville– After taking a look round we went on to St Juan de los Reyes wh is a most lovely ruin the French having blown up part of the lovely cloisters in which I sat waiting while the others went over the rest of the Convent wh is turned into a museum. Then we went to see the old Synagogue which is lovely with Moorish architecture. It is now a church but not used often– We passed by a place where there were birds hanging up & I saw a bird with a red breast & head wh they called a pardillo & one of the gentlemen got it for me to take home to Madrid. After walking about on the hard pavements of the steep & narrow streets I went back to the Inn & laid down to rest & fell asleep from wh I woke with a headache. However it was not so very bad & I was able to go to dinner but shortly after I was glad to go to bed.
