25 May 1870 — Madrid
Wednesday. 25th [May 1870]. Breakfast at 9.30. I wrote for Henry & marked some dusters. At 12 Mrs Hunt fetched me & we went to Palmaroli. It was very hot & at 2 Mrs Hunt accompanied me here & then went home– Mr Whyte & Mr Riaño to lunch. Mr R. goes to Zaragoza today & Mr Chaffers is to meet him there & he has authority to spend £1500. I began to write but had several interruptions & also a visit from Mme von Orlich & her niece Miss Mathew so I gave up writing as a bad job & when they were gone, finding it was past 5, I dressed for riding. It was very hot but we had a lovely ride & got back to dinner at 8. As Henry had a great deal to write I left him & went to Mme Riaño’s for an hour & then came home to bed. We heard today the sad news that Mr Pickman’s 2nd son Charles had been thrown from his horse & killed–
