20 June 1870 — Madrid
Monday. 20th [June 1870]. I wrote a letter to Grannie & also to Arthur Helps to condole with him on the loss of Dickens. Mr Nevile turned up again on his way finally for the North. Henry & I rode alone in the Casa de Campo. After dinner we went in the carriage to call for the Riaños & went to the concert in the Buen Retiro Gardens. Which was pleasant but there was very little air. We had ices in the gardens between whiles of the music. Saw Palmaroli, Mr Ash: & Mr de Martino there. He said his wife & child had gone off to Sweden but were to go under Brehm’s protection as far as Cologne. We did not stay late at the gardens.
