21 June 1870 — Madrid | |
Tuesday. 21st [June 1870]. I spent the morng writing for myself & copying for Henry letters to Lord Clarendon. In the eveng Hy & I went for a drive in the Mon Cloa & met Mme Mercier & her children, we had the Riaños Mr Gayangos, Inzenga & Messrs Ash: & Sey to dinner & after dinner a few people came to tea viz: M. & Mme Silvela the Govr of Madrid & Mme Benites with a niece of his. The Canitz, Mme Karnicky, Palmaroli, Baron Saurma, Ittersum, Lindstrand—De Blas &c &c. Moreno Benites’ niece sang—a very fine mezzo Sopo voice. She sang Italian very well & then entranced the company by singing charmingly some Spanish airs wh she did very well. She is rather good looking tho’ some what common looking but very intelligent & when she sings quite handsome– | |
