24 June 1870 — Madrid
Friday. 24th [June 1870]. I spent all the morning in arranging & packing things & putting away others & giving various directions. Mme Bauer came in the afternoon to bid us good bye also Mme Canitz & Miss Clifford also Sagasta & Mr de Blas. At 6 Henry & I went out driving to leave some cards & I went up to say good bye to Mme Riaño & so we went home to dinner at 8. At 10 we went to Prims it being his fête day we found a good many people but it appeared that last night was his night to have gone as the great day is the eve of peoples’ fêtes, & last night there had been a serenade by the regimental bands. So many people went to hear the serenade that the carriages could not get inside the gates to go up to the door. It was also Juanito’s fete day & there were quantities of presents for them both– I was very tired & glad to go home–
