23 June 1870 — Madrid
Thursday. 23rd [June 1870]. Henry & I went over the House with Ramon to talk over the repairs. At 5 we took a ride in the Casa de Campo & after dinner we called for the Riaños & drove on the Prado to see the fair of the vigil of the feast of St John. It was a very pretty sight; on the left hand going to the Atocha were quantities of little stalls, tents &c—all lighted up & fire at every 2 or 3 yards where people were cooking “buñuelos” a kind of little bit of batter wh is made into a ring dipped into a cauldron of boiling oil & pulled out with a stick & powdered with sugar– The fashion is on this night to go on eating these all night taking also a little brandy. I wanted to taste them but Hy would not let me– Besides these & cakes there was very little else sold, a few glass whistles & common toys of wh we bought specimens. The accumulated smell of boiling oil got rather over powering & we left the fair & went to an Horchateria in the Carrera St Geronimo & had Horchata & I had “Leche meringada” wh is iced milk with cinnamon. We took a turn in the Fuente & then went home to bed.
