26 June 1870 — La Granja | |
Sunday. 26th [June 1870]. We stayed in all the morning & wrote. Baron Benifayo came in the morning to tell us that the fountains were to play at 6 this evening. We lunched at 2 & read & sat quiet till 5 wh we had tea & then went out. We peeped into the gardens of the Palace wh seem lovely & then went to the Regents & met them coming out children & all. The Regimental band was playing in the gardens & some of the fountains playing– They are very fine & rendered more beautiful than those of Versailles by their setting of mountain & forest. We walked round all the fountains that were playing followed by all the people who happened to be walking in the gardens & then got in carriages to take a drive. A thunder shower came on & the great drops soon spoiled my grey silk gown—but did not hurt the Dss lovely toilette wh was pink silk. We drove to see the ruins of Valsain the ancient château of Charles Vth wh the Regent has just bought. He talks of rebuilding it except that he has no land round it. It is most beautifully situated looking up a long valley with the mountains getting blue in the distance. A good deal of the walls still remain and 3 towers still roofed in & Hy suggested that by pulling down ½ the walls the other ½ with these materials might be restored. The Dss asked us to go in after dinner but we were tired & did not go. | |
