7 July 1870 — La Granja
Thursday. 7th [July 1870]. Henry got up early but I was rather late. Wrote some letters & at 11 got off to go with Regt & Dss for a picnic. We met the carriages at the iron gate just starting so I got into the waggonette with the Dss & children & Henry went with the Regent in his carriage & we all drove to a place in the hills near the river Balsaim called “La Boca del Asino”– There under the trees we found the table spread for our “dejeuner” & it was a very pretty spot. We had sent some chicken pies & cherry pies wh were very much admired & we took our samovar & made good tea. After breakfast we went down to the side of the stream & some of the gentlemen fished & we sat in the shade & walked on a little further now & then– When we had gone a little distance the Dss signified her wish of crossing the stream by some stepping stones but was found to be impossible, however some of the gentlemen carried some big stones & walked in up to their ancles in water for her to pass over—which having done—& the gentlemen all having wet their feet we all came back the same way & continued our walk—till we came to a grassy open shady spot where we sat down & I played with the children plaiting ferns for them– We sat there till nearly 3 when we began to think of turning home. The gentlemen caught butterflies & stuck them with pins in to the Dss’ hat wh seemed to me very cruel as the poor things were alive. We drove home in the same order as we came—getting home abt 4 and Henry found a cypher telegram wh I helped him to decypher. After dinner the piano that the Dss had lent me out of the Palace having come I sang & played all the eveng & began to read aloud a little to Henry when we found it was late & we went to bed. We had scarcely been in bed 5 mins: when Giovanni knocked & said Mr Ashburnham had arrived from Madrid & so Henry got up to speak to him & to tell him he must go on tomorrow to Paris.
