9 July 1870 — La Granja | |
Saturday. 9th [July 1870]. We had to wait at Villalba from 6 till 7.40 wh was very tiresome. The postal train went by 20 mins: before that but being merely a mail train they refused to let us get into it & we were obliged to wait for a train wh takes 2 hours getting to Madrid instead of one– However we reached Madrid at 9 & quickly drove home—had breakfast & then I went to bed & slept till 2 but woke with a head ache– Henry was obliged immediately to set to work & go & see the French Ambr & Prim & Sagasta. He found them all in a great state—Mercier furious with Prim for having deceived him—& Prim furious with the French—who made some very insolent speeches in the Cortès & French Chambers—accusing Prim of intending an alliance with Prussia against France. Cerruti also came to see Henry at luncheon—in a great fidget. I was obliged to lie down all the afternoon– Mr Seymour stayed so late helping Henry that he asked him to stay & dine. While I was having my dinner on the sofa Mrs Hunt came to see me & sat with me till nearly 10 when she & Mr Sey: left & we went off to bed. | |
