14 July 1870 — Madrid | |
Thursday. 14th [July 1870]. The 1st thing after breakfast Henry got a letter from Prim saying Hohenzollern père had in the name of his son withdrawn his consent to be a candidate for the throne to save Spain from a war—which sets the matter at rest—& is a great relief– A very busy morng getting the messenger off– I wrote out 4 despatches & a long private letter to Lord Granville– Just as we were finishing luncheon the Regent called. He said he hoped to be able to return to La Granja tomorrow as there was to be a Council tonight at the Regency but he said he would let us know when it was decided. I rested & worked in the afternoon. After dinner by appointment we went to see the Riaños but somehow they were gone out—so went & sat on the Prado for a little while & then quite tired went home in a cab. | |
